Commitment to Sustainability

We know there are many concerns about ethical sourcing and sustainability of popular smoke cleansing products; most notably, California White Sage and Palo Santo. And we feel that it is vitally important for you to be able to trust your supplier of these items.

Please rest assured that we at Blessed Ember take ethical sourcing and sustainability very seriously and we only work with suppliers who do the same. The only White Sage you will find on our site is gathered and bundled using traditional methods by members of the Cochimi tribe of Baja California, Mexico. We believe strongly that indiginous tribes should benefit from our use of this sacred herb rather than be hurt by it, and we will not source White Sage from anywhere that we cannot be certain of its origin and ethical harvest.

Where Palo Santo is concerned, we only source from companies in Ecuador and Peru where the government has strict policies in place regarding the sustainable harvest of this natural resource. Wood may only be harvested from dead branches that have been drying on the ground for an extended period of time. The companies we purchase from also work tirelessly planting trees to ensure that forests continue to thrive for generations to come. Demand for Palo Santo is actually a benefit to the sustainability of the Bursera graveolens tree because the marketability of the product creates an incentive for companies to replant and nurture the forests that provide it.

Finally, we encourage the use of many types of flora in your smoke cleansing rituals. White Sage and Palo Santo are amazing but there are hundreds of woods, resins and herbs for you to try in your own practice. Instead of White Sage, try Garden Sage (it is one of the alternative bundles we offer). Look in your spice cabinet for herbs and spices like rosemary, basil and cinnamon. Or, check out your garden or backyard for lavender, sagebrush and juniper.

We are currently in the developmental process of offering a variety of different blends for you to experiment with as well.

In order to enjoy the benefits of our smoke cleansing rituals for years and decades and centuries to come, we must continue to nurture the plants that nurture us. We hope you will join us in this endeavor and please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have.
